The government’s decision to designate data centres as critical national infrastructure says a lot about how dependent we have become on digital systems. When a facility goes down, the impact can reach well beyond the building itself.
For those of us around engineering and construction, there is plenty of familiar ground: power, cooling, controls, commissioning, programme management and maintaining service under pressure. A person who has delivered on complex live sites may have skills that travel well into this market.
That doesn’t mean every water engineer is suddenly a data centre specialist. It means employers should look carefully at transferable experience, and candidates should be specific about the systems and environments they know.
