Retention starts before somebody joins
If an offer promises responsibility, development or a sensible working pattern, those things need to be real once the person starts. No clever recruitment process can rescue a job that has been oversold.
Tell candidates what is going well and what is still messy. Give them a proper induction, clear expectations and somebody to speak to when the inevitable questions arise.
The early weeks shape how people feel about a business. A little honesty and structure goes a long way.
