Project Manager – Shafts & Tunnelling

Location: Greater Manchester, with projects across the North West
Type: Permanent, full time

We’re recruiting a Project Manager – Shafts & Tunnelling to lead technically demanding underground civil engineering works. You’ll bring together planning, temporary works, specialist subcontractors and site delivery to keep projects safe, coordinated and on programme.

Our client is an established civil engineering and utilities contractor with a growing portfolio of infrastructure work across the North West. This role offers the chance to take responsibility for specialist schemes within a business that values strong technical judgement and invests in its delivery teams.

What you’ll be doing

As Project Manager – Shafts & Tunnelling, you’ll manage projects from pre-construction through to handover, working closely with engineers, designers, commercial colleagues and site teams. Your responsibilities will include:

• Planning construction sequences, access, resources and specialist subcontract works.
• Coordinating temporary works, design information and technical approvals.
• Managing site safety, quality, environmental controls and project records.
• Monitoring programme, costs, risks and changes under the contract.
• Resolving ground, interface and delivery issues with the wider project team.
• Maintaining clear communication with clients and stakeholders.
• Leading site teams and making sure completed works meet specification.

What we’re looking for

You’ll have managed shaft construction, tunnelling or closely related underground civil engineering works. Experience with excavation support, temporary works, complex ground conditions or trenchless methods would be especially relevant.

You’ll need strong civil engineering fundamentals, sound NEC contract knowledge and the ability to manage specialist work safely. CSCS, SMSTS, First Aid and a full UK driving licence would be expected; a relevant construction or engineering qualification would be valuable.

A strong Project Manager – Shafts & Tunnelling will be as comfortable challenging a construction method as they are leading people and managing the client relationship.
