Stop writing job adverts for an imaginary person

A wish list of twenty requirements usually narrows your search before it has even started. Separate the things someone must have on day one from the things a capable person could learn.

For a water project role, tell candidates the location, project type, team, salary range, travel expectations and the genuine qualifications needed. If experience from another sector could transfer, say so.

The more honest the advert, the better the conversations. You will spend less time rejecting unsuitable applicants and more time speaking to people who could genuinely do the job.
