🚩 𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗥𝗨𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥? 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗚𝗦.
Not all recruiters are created equal.
And if you’re trusting someone with your next career move, there are a few things you should be looking out for.
🚩 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗚𝗦
❌ You ring the office and somehow they’re ALWAYS unavailable.
❌ They’ve promised to send your CV but you’ve had no email confirmation, no job spec, nothing.
❌ Your initial conversation lasted about 4 minutes. They barely know your name, never mind your experience.
❌ They promise you the world, then disappear off the face of it.
✅ 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗥𝗨𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗕𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗚
📞 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – If they’re genuinely busy, they’ll get back to you at the earliest opportunity. You’re not an inconvenience.
📧 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 – Once you’ve agreed to be represented, you should receive confirmation, a full job specification and information about the business. Ideally, the same day.
🤝 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – 15 minutes, 20 minutes, whatever it takes. They should know your experience, motivations and expectations. You should know the role, the business and exactly what happens next.
🎯 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆 – If the client takes three weeks to give feedback, tell you. If interviews aren’t happening until next month, tell you. If you’re not right for the job, TELL YOU.
𝗡𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
It’s basic communication, honesty and a bit of professional courtesy.
Yet somehow, these things still seem to be optional in parts of our industry.
If your recruiter isn’t working hard for you, why should you work hard for them?
𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵.
If you’re acting professionally, you deserve to be treated professionally.
Simple as that.
