From Good to Exceptional: The Four Things That Make the Difference

There’s a big difference between being good at what you do and being someone people genuinely rate as exceptional.

Talent obviously helps. Experience matters. Knowledge matters.

But I don’t think any of those things are what really separate people.

For me, it comes down to four things:

Accountability. Consistency. Attitude. Discipline.

They’re simple. There’s nothing revolutionary about them. But actually living by them every day is a different story.

And whether it’s recruitment, business, sport, leadership or just life in general, I think they matter.

Accountability — Own It

This is a big one for me.

When something goes wrong, where do you look first?

It’s incredibly easy to blame the market, the client, your colleague, the candidate, the system or just bad luck.

Sometimes those things genuinely are responsible.

But accountability means looking at yourself first.

What could I have done differently?

Could I have communicated better? Could I have acted sooner? Did I actually do what I said I was going to do?

Being accountable doesn’t mean beating yourself up every time something goes wrong. It means owning your part in it, learning from it and doing something about it.

People make mistakes. Exceptional people take responsibility for them.

Consistency — Do It Again

Anyone can have a good day.

You can smash your targets on Monday, have a brilliant month or suddenly find yourself ridiculously motivated for a couple of weeks.

The difficult bit is doing it again.

And again.

And again.

Consistency is turning up when the buzz has disappeared.

It’s making the calls, following up, training, learning, delivering what you promised and maintaining your standards even when nobody is watching.

You don’t become exceptional because of one brilliant performance.

You get there by stacking good performances on top of each other for a long time.

Attitude — Find a Way

I genuinely believe your attitude can decide the outcome before you’ve even started.

“That won’t work.”

“I can’t do that.”

“That’s not my job.”

“We’ve tried that before.”

You’ve already put yourself on the back foot.

Having the right attitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is brilliant or walking around with a permanent smile on your face.

It means being willing to try.

Problems will happen. Plans will go wrong. Some days will be crap.

The difference is whether your first instinct is to find an excuse or find a way forward.

Discipline — The One That Holds It Together

Maybe I’m slightly biased here because of my military background, but I think discipline ties the other three together.

Motivation is great.

Discipline is what happens when motivation isn’t there.

It’s sticking to timings. Planning your day properly. Knowing your numbers. Understanding your priorities. Doing the difficult task rather than avoiding it.

Most importantly, it’s knowing what needs to be done — and actually doing it.

You need discipline to remain consistent.

You need discipline to hold yourself accountable.

And sometimes you need discipline to sort your attitude out and crack on when you’d rather do anything else.

Good Is Easy. Exceptional Takes Work.

None of these four require you to be the cleverest person in the room.

They don’t require natural talent, a degree or 20 years of experience.

But they do require work.

Accountability.
Consistency.
Attitude.
Discipline.

Those are my four.

I’m sure there are plenty of others that belong on the list.

What would yours be? What attributes do you think take someone from good to absolutely exceptional?
